Follow these four steps to get set up to live and work in Australia

Moving to the land down under?

Good onya!

If you’re applying for the one year Working Holiday Visa (WHV subclass 417) and you’re looking for some more information then you’re in the right place!

When moving to Australia, you don’t need to sweat the small stuff like what to pack and where to go.

The shopping in Australia is amazing (shoutout to Cotton On and Ghanda) and no matter where you end up, you’re bound to have a fun time.

However, prioritising the first week to get set up is going to make your move SO much easier.

Melbourne

I know firsthand that finding application links and websites can be a massive headache. Don’t worry, this blog post explains it all with links included!

1. The Visa

Sydney

You heard it here first- moving to Australia is expensive. The first step is applying for your Visa. You’ll need to create an ImmiAccount online to get started.

Most applications take roughly fourteen days to process so ensure you’ve uploaded all the correct documents and that these meet the necessary requirements.

Currently the WHV application costs $635 AUD which is around 334 UK pounds. Unfortunately, the expenses don’t stop there. As part of the application, you’ll need to prove that you have $5000 AUD in your bank account which is equivalent to £2632. This can be done by uploading a bank statement. It is also advised that you have enough money to cover a flight home.

*You may need to have a medical check if you’re applying from or have recently visited a country that has a high risk of tuberculosis

2. Getting Set Up

Melbourne

Now let’s talk about making money instead of spending it.

You’re ready to put the WORK into working holiday visa. However, to ensure that you can get paid, it’s essential that you apply for a Tax File Number (TFN) and open a bank account.

Perth

Once you’re in Australia, you can apply online for a TFN. The verification process takes up to seven days. You will need an address for your TFN to be sent to and this can take up to 28 days! So I’d advise getting this sorted as soon as possible.

If the hostel you arrive at is not where you’re planning to stay longer term, I’d recommend making some connections at your hostel reception so they can keep an eye out for your post!

Don’t worry- if you need your TFN more quickly, you can phone up and say you have a job and will need your TFN. It can be provided over the phone.

Setting up a bank account is really easy. Commonwealth bank is a popular choice amongst backpackers (not sponsored). You can start the process online but will need to head into a local branch with your identification to complete the set up.

You should also familiarise yourself with Superannuation. There are lots of fantastic guides to explain this pension savings scheme and how backpackers can apply online.

3. Medical Care

Blue Mountains

Medicare is the health insurance scheme that’s available in Australia. With Medicare you can access hospital appointments, treatments and medications at a reduced cost.

If you’re visiting Australia and from a country with a Reciprocal Healthcare Agreement then you are eligible to apply for the service. The eligible countries are: UK, the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, Finland, Italy, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Slovenia, Sweden and New Zealand.

Medicare applications have a long processing time so I would advise you begin the application process as soon as possible and ensure you provide ALL of the correct documents. You can access more information about enrolling here.

Diabetics can also apply for an NDSS card if from a country that has Reciprocal Rights. The National Diabetes Services Scheme provides access to services, support and subsidized Diabetes products. You can register for the card here.

You will also need to pay for an appointment with an Endocrinologist to get set up on the scheme and register certain medical equipment (e.g. CGM’s) onto the card.

*Not all products are covered on the NDSS card- you can check what’s available here.

Noosa

In Australia, you can book GP appointments through a directory. I’d recommend using HotDoc. You can book online or through the app.

4. Getting Accomodation

Brisbane

Accommodation in Australia is pretty overwhelmed at the moment. I would suggest booking some of your hostels in advance (depending on where you’re flying in to).

Finding somewhere to live can feel like a full time job. If you’re looking for something more permanent, I’d recommend Flatmates. Facebook groups like Fairy Floss (Melbourne only) are also great.

For short term, budget friendly accommodation, check out Apps like MadPaws, Trusted Housesitters and Couch Surfing.

Perth

Once those applications are out of the way, you can begin an exciting new experience living and working in Australia!
